Sticky’s Eccentric Brake Pin by Casa Performance

The eccentric brake pin set is a concept by Sticky (author of the Complete Spanner’s Lambretta Manual), intended to improve the action of the Lambretta rear drum brake. It works by allowing you to manually re-position the fixed axis of the brake shoes. These are machined in the wrong position on many Lambretta engine casings, from every manufacturer; but especially SIL Indian ones.

We found during testing that the eccentric pins improved the braking of every Lambretta we tried; providing a more progressive brake that worked well straight away with brand new brake shoes. This improvement comes because you can maximize the contact area of new shoes rather than needing them to bed-in.

What can the eccentric pins do?

They can be used to resolve the following situations:

When you fit new brake shoes and the hub will not fit until you grind away some of the friction material.

When you fit new brake shoes and the brake is ineffective because only one part of one shoe is contacting the drum.

If you have a casing with incorrectly positioned pins, you can use a brake shoe skimming tool to optimize shoe contact. However, that often results in the tools cutting away so much friction material that the back brake shoes do not last long before they need to be replaced again.

 The eccentric shoes allow you, using either the CP brake alignment tool code STICKY04 (or an old brake hub with a section cut out) to optimize the position of the pins so that the brake shoes contact the drum together, and over the maximum possible surface area.

Correctly set eccentric pins will vastly reduce the ‘running-in’ time for the friction material contact patch to perfectly match the profile of the brake drum.

The system is intended to be ‘fit and forget’, so you get the same advantage every time you fit new rear brake shoes. However, brake shoe lining thicknesses do vary from brand to brand. You may need to re-adjust if you switch brands.
